In addition to assisted living, Houston’s MorningStar at River Oaks provides suites devoted to the care of seniors with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. River Oaks is a part of the MorningStar Senior Living company, which was founded in 2003 and has 40+ communities in eleven states either in operation or under construction.
At MorningStar, our approach to memory care is designed around our comprehensive program we call “Lavender Sky.” Our philosophy encourages us to walk alongside a resident as we thoughtfully enter, embrace and explore the world of dementia. With insight and intentionality, we enter our memory-impaired residents’ “purple world” to cross over the physical and emotional boundaries that would otherwise separate us. We also educate the families of those afflicted with dementia on how to follow our lead and enter too. Another important aspect of our unique methodology is to accept the diagnosis of dementia and embrace the fact (we know it is difficult) that this is the path we must take together. By embracing a deep understanding of the disease, it allows us to embrace the necessary changes in our own communication style as well as physically embrace residents with the power of touch. And most importantly we embrace hope. Finally, Lavender Sky explores a boundless variety of resourceful and individualized solutions for we recognize that what works today may not work tomorrow. When memory care residents come to MorningStar at River Oaks, we explore the person’s life including their background, interests and preferences to create a specialized care plan. As you can see, memory care at our senior care community springs from a deep understanding of the disease and is offered with the utmost love and compassion. Please contact us or visit our website to learn more about senior living, our staff and the philosophy that guides our care. MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. Memory problems and confusion are some of the most commonly known symptoms, but there are other behaviors just as common that can be unsettlingly and disruptive. The Medical News Today reports on the various behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia known as BPSDs.
Research suggests as many as 97% of people with dementia have one or more of the following symptoms: agitation; anxiety; psychosis; depression, apathy, irritability and/or physical or verbal aggression. Agitation may include behaviors such as pacing, wandering, restlessness and fidgeting. Repetitive movements and sleep disturbances are also common. Understanding these changes and learning strategies to deal with them can result in better care for the patient and make it easier for caregivers to cope. Doctors are not sure why dementia patients suffer from psychosis but suggest it could be due to interruptions and changes to neurotransmitters such as dopamine, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and serotonin. Along with these interferences to brain waves, many dementia patients also suffer from poor memory and impaired visuospatial abilities, which can confuse the person as to what is real and what isn’t. Sleep disturbances can come in the form of hypersomnia with symptoms of reversed sleep-wake patterns and fragmented sleep. Another problem can be rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder. To help combat sleep disturbances, experts recommend limiting naps during the daytime and exposing the person to daylight (especially morning light) and getting physical exercise. If you are a family caregiver, it is important to reach out and get help. The Alzheimer’s Association is a good resource for both information and support as is the person’s healthcare team. Along with assisted living, Houston’s MorningStar at River Oaks provides individualized care for those with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. Our memory care is based on our extensive knowledge and experience with dementia-related diseases and we support residents from the early onset of the disease through the final stages. Experts explain the more we know about urinary tract infections, the better we can protect ourselves from getting one as well as quickly getting proper treatment when we do have one. According to a 2019 report from Therapeutic Advances in Urology, 50% to 60% of women experience a UTI, defined as an overgrowth of bacteria in the urinary tract, at least once in their lifetime.
Understanding the urinary tract is a good place to start in understanding the infection. The lower urinary tract includes the urethra, the tube allowing urine to exit the body; and the bladder, which stores and empties the urine through the urethra. The upper urinary tract includes the ureters that carry the urine from the kidneys to the bladder; and the kidneys making the urine. UTIs are more common in the lower urinary tract and symptoms include a change in the color and smell of urine. It may also appear cloudy and be dark or red looking, and smell bad. Many feel as if they are unable to completely empty their bladder and may experience pain when urinating. In some cases people experience fever and chills, pain in the pelvic region and a need to urinate more frequently. Infections in the upper urinary tract involve the kidneys, and while less common can be more severe. A person may have a fever above 102.5 F, blood in the urine and flu-like symptoms. Frequent UTIs in women can result from bladder prolapse, kidney stones and being post-menopausal. Although UTIs are more common in women, doctors say men do get them; and more often as they age. Many older men suffer from an enlarged prostate, making it harder to completely empty the bladder and setting up an environment for bacteria to develop in the remaining urine. Doctors say there are some steps we can take to help prevent UTIs including staying hydrated during the day and urinating when you have the urge. Other self-care for women includes urinating after sex and being careful to wipe from front to back. Medical professionals say avoiding douching and using powders and sprays in the genital area as much as possible. If you have diabetes, it is important to manage the disease as best as possible for many reasons including being more susceptible to UTIs. When a loved one is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, families must face the question of what the future will hold. For many a specifically designed memory care community will be the answer as it offers an environment focused on improving quality of life and keeping the resident safe.
A Place for Mom, a senior living referral website and information service, explains dementia care, also called memory care, is different from other senior care communities and features services such as 24-hour care, trained staff, memory-enhancing therapies, physical layouts that reduce confusion, a secure environment, and more. Moreover, as Alzheimer’s disease is progressive, a memory care home is equipped to care for a person from the onset to the most advanced stages. Many of the behaviors and symptoms that develop as the disease progresses such as disorientation, confusion and aggression can be difficult for families to handle on their own. At memory care communities, the staff is experienced in managing these types of behaviors and uses specialized techniques to calm or stimulate as situations call for. In addition, a move to a memory community can reduce stress for family caregivers as caring for a loved one with dementia is often a full-time job and family members generally have other responsibilities. Another benefit of memory care homes is the controlled environment which helps reduce confusion and disorientation for residents with proper lighting, clearly marked hallways, and a décor to encourage calmness and familiarity. Also, outside doors are locked to prevent wandering, allowing the inside atmosphere to safely encourage independence. MorningStar of Pasadena is honored to offer this type of comprehensive memory care in our Reflections Neighborhood. We provide support to our residents and their families with the kind of services, wellness programs and activities essential to quality of life. Our approach to memory care is encompassed under the expanse of possibilities we call Lavender Sky and uses a broad range of Montessori-based therapy techniques. Source: aplaceformom.com/alzheimers-care The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that every 40 seconds a person has a stroke and every 3 minutes and 14 seconds someone dies from one. While that is alarming, the CDC says that almost 80 percent of strokes can be prevented.
Did you know that one of the leading causes of strokes is high blood pressure, also called hypertension, and is the most prevalent health condition facing Americans? Statistics show nearly half (48%) of US adults have hypertension, and as people age, their blood pressure goes up. Experts believe about 70% of people 65 years and older have hypertension and should take steps to reduce it. If you fall into that age group or are at risk for HBP, start by regularly monitoring your blood pressure. If high, work with your doctor to find ways to lower it including getting more exercise and eating a healthy diet. Another way to help prevent strokes is to quit smoking. Smoking reduces the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream and forces the heart to work harder, which in turn, increases the likelihood of blood clots. Also, if you are diabetic, you need to manage the disease. The American Diabetes Association reports that diabetics are two to four times more likely to have a stroke than someone without the disease. Exercise is another way to lower your risk. Doctors say 30 minutes of moderate exercise five days a week, like a brisk walk, yoga or dancing are beneficial. Moreover, if you are overweight, try to lose weight as obesity puts you at risk for any number of health issues including stroke. And don’t forget to get your cholesterol checked. The AHA recommends everyone 20 years of age and over should have it done at least every 5 years. Check with your healthcare provider regarding other risks for stroke. Identity theft is the illegal use of a person’s Social Security number, credit card or other personal information to commit a crime. According to a report from Javelin Strategy & Research, identity fraud cost 40 million Americans a combined $43 billion in 2022. While this figure was $9 billion less than 2021, financial service providers and consumers should be as vigilant as ever about protecting personal identifying information.
Although financial institutions are doing what they can to protect our personal information from those who wish to fraudulently use it, we can also take steps to protect ourselves. The first tip is to never give your bank account and Social Security numbers to people over the phone. Many scammers claim to be from your bank or a government entity and tell the person they are trying to protect them, when in fact they are doing the opposite. Remember the Social Security office or your bank is not going to call you and ask for your number. Another way to prevent identity theft is to not reply to phishing emails. These types of emails or text messages can contain official looking logos and promise free services or goods, lottery prizes or government grants. Others may tell you there is a problem with your bank or another company and they need information to settle the account. AARP says the security company, Valimail estimates 3.4 billion fake emails are sent out every day worldwide. The US Government Office of Justice Programs says in the event of having your identity stolen:
They recommend keeping a log of all your correspondence and actions taken to report the incident. This should include dates, names and phone numbers of who you contacted or reported the thief to as well as sending documents via certified mail. Keep a record of any expenses incurred in case you are entitled to restitution when the responsible party is caught. A Place for Mom’s website explains how many people in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease or another type of dementia can live independently with or without the help of in-home caregivers or family members. However, they also stress there may come a time when the disease progresses to a stage where the person’s safety and physical well-being is in jeopardy and more care is needed.
As a person with Alzheimer’s may have good days and bad, it can be hard to tell if they would be better served in a memory care community. Experts say signs include: has their appearance changed? Do they look unkempt and have they lost weight due to forgetting to eat? Do they appear agitated and confused? Are they unable to carry on a conversation? Your loved one’s healthcare provider can help you decide if it is time for memory care. Dr. Philip Branshaw, an internal medicine specialist in Batavia, Illinois, says, “When talking about memory care, or some form of a different living arrangement, I’ll center the talk around their ability to perform the activities of daily living and safety.” A Place for Mom says to gauge a senior’s abilities and safety, your doctor may ask if they: Get lost on routes they take frequently, such as going to the grocery store or taking a walk around the neighborhood

Source: aplaceformom.com/caregiver-resources/articles/is-it-time-for-memory-care The National Institute on Aging reminds older adults mild forgetfulness is more often a normal part of aging and not a serious memory problem. They explain serious problems generally involving things like the person asking the same question over and over again and getting lost in places they know well. They may also have trouble following recipes or directions and find themselves confused about people, places and time.
If you are someone who is forgetting things, there are some steps you can take to feel more confident. These involve several simple things you can do, which will benefit your whole being like getting enough sleep (seven to eight hours a night), not drinking a lot of alcohol; and exercising and eating well. Managing high blood pressure is also important. Other more practical tips to help with forgetfulness are putting your wallet or purse, keys, glasses and phone in the same place each day. Instead of assuming you will remember, write out shopping and need to-do lists and use a calendar or take notes. NIA says to get involved in activities that focus on using the mind and body and stay socially involved. If you feel depressed for weeks at a time, talk to your doctor. Strategies to improve forgetfulness include challenging our brains by learning new things as well as using all our senses. For example, prepare a new recipe that requires lots of spices. If you are eating out, try to identify the flavors and seasonings used in the meal. To help remember new information better such as names, places, etc., try repeating it out loud or writing it down as this reinforces the memory. For example, if you want to remember a new neighbor’s name, say it out loud back to them, like “hi Jack.” Then an hour or so later say the new neighbor’s name out loud again. At MorningStar at River Oaks, we have spacious assisted living suites in a choice of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floorplans.
